Education

Recently I have been facing difficulties with the education system because I've not been linked, informed or, a bit of personal blame, lead myself down the right path and chosen appropriate courses suited to my own abilities. But that's ok! It really isn't the end of the world. There are so many people out there experimenting with different routes and methods of getting the right qualifications. It doesn't matter if you know what you want to do right now or ten years down the line and this is why...

The government are basically feeding into us that they are funding all our education, therefore we 'need to get it right the first time'. We only get a few attempts at GCSE's (we actually pay for the re-sits FYI, Mr Cameron) but then, we don't want to re-sit them too much as it adds to the stress of the numerous other GCSE exams we have to take within the same period of time. This is understandable to be fair. However, when it comes to higher education we only get one attempt at AS and A levels due to the new enforced laws of education. This is because they no longer want to fund the re-takes or the ability to repeat a year for students in colleges and sixth form centres. That is the tax payers money. Many of these tax payers have children who they will want to excel in the world of education so they can go on in life, get a job and put food on the table for themselves. I would want my child to do well no matter what route they take.
You are able to go on to a different type of course if you fail another. For example, you can move from AS levels to an apprenticeship or b-tech. But then, if you fail these then the chances of re-taking are slim. But, you can apply elsewhere at other colleges or schools, even night classes! It really doesn't matter if you take a longer journey to get to your desired destination. It's what I'm doing and I I'm happy. I have tried so many qualifications. AS levels to B-techs. I am currently studying for a b-tech in photography at level 3 and it's fair to say I'm not happy with it. I realised while on this course that this isn't the career I want anymore. My life long dream of being a primary school teacher came back and I have never been so enthusiastic for it. I am taking the longer route and have signed up to do a diploma in childcare and early years education at Buxton College. It's a long winded process that I'm undergoing to get what I want but I don't mind because I know at the end of it that I will be happy. You don't have to take the conservative desired route of going into 'elite' education, doing A levels then applying to good universities. You can still get into your desired career and earn enough money to live off by doing apprenticeships and diplomas. Any form of education, no longer how long it takes you to complete it, can get you where you want to be as long as you have determination and are willing to work hard. So don't let any one tell you otherwise.
There are forty year old mature students rethinking their options and taking college courses, rehabilitated drug addicts and mental health patients going back to education so they can be happy and live the life they want by starting a new leaf. No matter what life throws at you, you will always have a second chance. That doesn't mean you can muck about in your first year then go "oh it's ok I can start again". If you have the ability, use it! The process will be a lot less painful that way. This post is aimed at people who aren't sure about what they want to do or how to go about it. Do what you want, not what your parents want to do. Not what the government wants you to do.

Do what makes you happy. With the right attitude, you will get there and that's a promise!
