Abortion// Why we can't Judge
I've decided to write about a controversial issue which I have a very strong opinion about. I hope it doesn't come across as too morbid but it is something I have been contemplating writing about for a while now. Feedback is welcome in the comment section below, so let me know your own feelings on abortion...
There are thousands of people across the globe who condemn abortion, whether it's because of religion or just pure personal beliefs. It can create mental health issues and even some physical damage to the mother. This point is one which I am not going against as the procedure isn't exactly one to be remembered in a positive light. Other's say it is un-justified murder, even when the fetus isn't even fully developed yet. Facebook is filled daily with photos of helpless, unborn babies taken from the womb of their mother, all bloody and severed. It's always a disturbing sight to see and can put any woman off abortion for good. The people who make these photos, however, don't realise abortion is a personal choice and there is always a reason behind it, it's not always just a random change of mind when someone decides they don't want a baby anymore. I don't always contradict these opinions, but I do, however, contradict those groups of activists who stand outside clinics shouting abuse at women considering abortion or going in for the full procedure. Here is why...
I discussed in the above paragraph that there are always reasons for abortion. Some people decide last minute they do not want to conceive a child and start a family anymore. I do believe this is a waste of an abortion. You always need to be 100% sure you are ready to start a family before you get pregnant, because there are people out there in awful situations who really need these abortions and are getting named and shamed because of these last minute decision situations. It doesn't just mean you're denying someone in need of an abortion their chance to have one, but it can also, as stated above, cause severe mental health issues such as PTSD (having flashbacks of the surgical procedure, nightmares etc.) and physical health implications such as infections of the pelvis and blood clots in the uterus.
Nevertheless, it is none of our business why a woman (and possibly her partner) decide to terminate the pregnancy which is why this stigma should end. It is a personal issue and decision and it isn't for us to judge the situation. Unfortunately, not all babies are produced with love. Women and young girls are sometimes put in sticky situations where abortion may be the only option.
Here is a list of emergency situations, considering abortion is a form of emergency contraception, which should prove to you all why abortion isn't just 'murder of an innocent life'.
If the mother is suffering with a serious illness
The child may struggle through life coping with the fact that his/her mother has died as a result of going through with the pregnancy, leading to self blame and problems such as paranoia. It can also provide serious risks for the mother during the pregnancy and/or labour such as hemorrhages and enhanced symptoms of the illness they are suffering with.
Mental health is also counted. Some soon-to-be mothers may have to have an abortion due to mental complications such as schizophrenia, anxiety and many other illnesses. Again, they may not feel that it is fair for their child to witness their suffering and possibly even be taken away in the early childhood stages. Again, it may result to the child growing up without a mother, causing a lot of upset and confusion.
If the pregnancy has been caused by criminal acts
Examples of this are rape, incest and child abuse. The baby will end up being a constant reminder of the traumatic event. The baby will also not be a result of loving sex, which is needed when making a child as it's best to make a child with someone you actually love and who loves you mutually. Many anti-abortionists will argue that you could put this baby up for abortion after it has been conceived. But do you not think the whole pregnancy process will be a traumatic ordeal, also? And once that child grows up, problems can occur again as it will grow inquisitive and want to know who his/her mother really is, as they will have a right to know once they turn eighteen years old.
If the child was to grow up having a 'poor quality of life'
If the child was to be born with serious mental defects, serious genetic problems or serious physical handicaps, a mother may find it appropriate to abort it. Personally, I would have a child if it was going to grow up with special needs. If it was going to die within a certain time period, let's say a couple of weeks after birth, I would want to personally spend that little amount of time with my child and make the time as precious as possible. If the child was going to grow up with special requirements due to being handicapped or having mental defects, again, personally I would go through with the pregnancy and make the life for that child as pain free as possible, putting all my time and money into making sure my child had the best life it could possibly have. I understand that there are extra costs within supporting a child with these defects and unfortunately not everyone has the money or may not believe they will be able to cope seeing their baby in pain or potentially losing that baby not long after conceiving it, so I understand if they would want to abort the child. I was just stating my personal reasons. I don't disagree with aborting for this reason, I just personally wouldn't because I'd want to give my child a chance of having life.
Mother feels they are too young to have a baby
There have been issues in this country with under age children having babies. We are the worst country for having children as young as fourteen getting pregnant. Again, it's something I disagree with as fourteen is just way too young. She deserves to learn her lesson and control herself in future, but she would be way too young to go through with the responsibility of having a child. If she feels ready, by all means go for it. But say she was going through her GCSE's and feels she needs an abortion, let her. It's a pregnancy induced by carelessness yes, but she can learn her lesson in other ways. Keeping a baby with no support is too harsh a punishment. Personally, I believe it's like a child raising another child. It's not fair. The baby needs a financially stable parent (or parents) so they have a good quality life.
These are just a few of the many reasons why abortion should stay legal. Don't go round judging people who obviously feel they need it. You do not know the situation or reasons behind the decision. Yes, there are circumstances where it's unacceptable such as a lack of care. But in the more serious reasons such as crime induced rape or the mother having a terminal/mental illness, then have a bit of respect and keep your opinions to yourself.
I'd love to hear your opinions on the issue. Feel free to comment them below. I probably won't respond though, unless your comment covers something that I have not in this blog, as you already know my opinion. xo
