The Inbetweeners Movie 2// Review

As promised last Thursday on one of my more special blog posts, the review of The Inbetweeners Movie 2!

The film begins with Simon, Niall and Will being rejected and dismissed from one of Will's uni "friend's" parties after being tricked into thinking it was a fancy dress party. Will, dressed as Harry Potter, with Simon, dressed as Ron, and Niall, dressed as Hermione, begin to walk away from the party disgruntled and bemused. While on their way to a pub, where Will is apparently a regular on student nights, Niall receives a boastful  e-mail from Jay, who is on a gap year in Australia. Again, we are treated to his compulsive lies. We are all told by Niall that Jay now runs his own night club, is a complete clunge magnet and is now a renowned DJ in Sydney known as 'DJ Big Penis'. Obviously, Niall falls for it all and suggests the boys go over to visit and 'surprise the fuck out of Jay'. Simon and Will are not convinced or keen until they return to Will's accommodation to find all his furniture duct taped to the ceiling, where they give in and trek off to Sydney only to find Jay is not as successful as Niall anticipated, but is a toilet cleaner in a night club and is living in a tent in his uncle's front garden. He is also there for more sentimental reasons but I am not going to spoil this for you...

Unfortunatley, the trailer really didn't sell this film for me and as said in my last blog post, I wasn't really convinced this film would be any good. It was completley full of Jay's creepy comments, basically making it look like a total joke of a film with no input from any of the other characters. Personally, I'm not the biggest fan of Jay. I'm in it for Will. This is besides the point though. Many people I know said that the trailer made the film look awful. How very misleading.

What assured me that this film was going to be worth my time was simply the opening line. Will doing what he does best, being naive and not having a clue how to keep his cool. "Greetings, muggles!". You can tell a lot more thought had been put into this film rather than the first one due to how the story fell together, yet it still didn't lose any humour. It's not a standard Geordie Shore lads kind of plot where each male character is gorgeous, perfect and a man whore. The characteristics are realistic British boys. The kind of Uni students you will walk past every day, not perfect at all. Niall being that friend who is a bit dopey and gullible, leading to the death of a dolphin after feeding it burgers and a meatball sandwich, and also his irritable bowel syndrome (I refuse to ruin this part and give you a spoiler for it). Simon, the family man who is too embarrassed to show it and loves to keep his cool in front of his friends, which ends up in a lot of family arguments. Jay, that friend who has to compulsively lie in order to gain limelight and attention. And finally, Will. My absolute favourite. Nerdy, a little naive too with no idea about how to 'stay cool' with girls.

There's not much I can really say without giving the story away and completley spoiling it for you. Many of the scenes, like the last film, I found extremley cringey. Such as Jay and his alleged 'hole in the ground', the part where Will and an old school friend nearly get up to some sexy stuff and more of Jay's lies. But I love how the funny side of Will was brought out more and how he received a bit more speculation for his character. He is a very loveable and amusing character to laugh at.

What sold this film for me wasn't just the fact Will got a bit more limelight but obviously the plot twists. *SPOILER ALERT* For example, how Will's mum and old head teacher end up getting engaged or how Kate ends up being a complete control freak over Simon purely because she is anxious he will find out about the affair she is having with one of his new uni mates. Or how Will becomes slightly desireable to an attractive girl. No. More to the point, the eye candy...

The guy with the dreadlocks, in character known as Ben. Ooooooft I couldn't stop drooling throughout the whole film. The dreadlocks and muscles definatley did it for me.Although his character was a complete nonce compared to Will, I'm sorry to say it but I'm not surprised Will's old school friend went for him. As Ben says, 'I always win!'. Or 'I never lose'. Oh lord I can't remember, he's just gorgeous.

A bit of criticism though, I wasn't too amused with all these rape jokes. Basically insinuating because Will is a more weak character he will get sexually assaulted by travelling. I know a lot of people will slate me for this point but rape isn't really a laughing matter despite what the context is. For me, it created a stereotype to the audiences watching the film that anyone who is weak, it is easier to take advantage of them and assault them.

All in all, I was very satisfied with the film/ The producers, however did not think carefully at all about what to include in the trailer and promotions of this film. A good film deserves a good trailer, portraying just how hilarious the film is. Not some bog standard trailer making an amazing film look like a cringey let down. I loved every minute of it, apart from the jokes that I stated in the previous paragraph. Personally, I'd give it a 7 out of 10, a big improvement compared to the first Inbetweeners Movie, which was just mildly amusing compared to this.

  1. awesome review Liv! I was actually gonna write a review of this movie but I decided against it cause I would get hate for it lmao, I used to really like the inbetweeners purely because of the banter but the show and the movies are actually super sexist, there are zero developed female characters, the only purpose women serve in the inbetweeners is to be a sexual conquest, and it's full of really degrading and offensive jokes :/ also not a fan of the gross-out humour, bit too much poo and wee for me in one film haha. I agree about Ben aha but I hate Will! I think he's waaay too self-entitled and he's a generally rude and cringey prick I'm so sorry ahahaha
