Suicide Squad | Film Review

I realise this post may be a little bit delayed now, as I'm sure more than half of you have read tons of reviews, or even seen the film yourself and formed your own opinion. But tough I'm still giving you mine.

The other Sunday, Tom and I took a spontaneous trip to our cinema for pizza and to see David Ayer's Suicide Squad. Fair to say, it was a pretty decent trip. And the film was INCREDIBLE.

"Figuring they're all expendable, a U.S. intelligence officer decides to assemble a team of dangerous, incarcerated supervillains for a top-secret mission. Now armed with government weapons, Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Captain Boomerang, Killer Croc and other despicable inmates must learn to work together. Dubbed Task Force X, the criminals unite to battle a mysterious and powerful entity, while the diabolical Joker (Jared Leto) launches an evil agenda of his own." (IMBD, 2016)

For starters (and I'm not talking about the pizza. Although in case you were wondering, we had wedges), the story line was incredible. I've never really liked diabolically unrealistic story lines, but this was something else. The casting really did the plot some favours too.
Many of you know I have never really been a fan of Cara Delevigne, as an actress per say. But FINALLY she has been cast as a character which suits her rigid, awkward personality. Dr June Moone/Enchantress was an excellent choice for her, and not at all "weird" like critics are saying.

One bit of casting that left my mind completely blown was the disappearance of Tom Hardy. Now, until the end credits I had no idea that he had quit the project. All the way through I was there thinking he was Captain Boomerang. BIG MISTAKE.
Tom Hardy was supposed to be playing Flagg, the guy who leads the Suicide Squad on their mission. He quit because he had "prior commitments" and also didn't agree with the "little amount of screen time" he would get. When really, we all knew Flagg was one of the bigger roles.

Seriously though...I can't be the only one who thought Captain Boomerang was identical to Tom Hardy!?

Back on topic now. I love how, at the beginning of the film, we got to see the stories of the squad members. I particularly enjoyed Diablo's scenes, as well as Killer Croc's. I already knew as much as I could about Harley Quinn and Deadshot.
Margot Robbie did a fantastic job as Harley Quinn. And Jared Leto was a fantastic Joker too. I really did prefer him to Heath Ledger, to be honest. Don't shoot me.

Margot Robbie and the Joker were great working together in this film, and I feel they represented the comic sufficiently well.
BUT to me, I saw the Joker in this film, whenever he made a quick snapshot appearance, as a little bit of a fashion advert for Chained and Able or something. I found him a little too glamorous in comparison to what I've seen in the comics. Although he does look dapper in the illustrations, this was something else. But obviously you can't stay true to the comics 100%, and I do admire Ayer for interpreting him differently. And isn't there a theory that there are three different jokers, too? To be honest, I wasn't complaining about the new look. Jared Leto was a very dishy Joker.
The romance between Harley Quinn and the Joker was very artistic. Although Ayer created a slight idea that Quinn is nothing but one of the Joker's more favourable stooges, I think it's a shame a lot of their scenes together were cut because there's now a mass speculation created by those who have not read the comics, that HQ's and the Joker's relationship is desirable.

If you're under this illusion, please read the comics and do your research. Because their relationship is crazy abusive. You can enjoy the characters and their stories by all means, but please don't romanticise them and think they are healthy. YOU'RE WATCHING A FILM ABOUT CRIMINALLY INSANE BAD GUYS

There are rumours of both a spin off film about the Joker and Harley Quinn, and also another Suicide Squad with new members to replace Diablo, who sacrificed himself for his new family, and Harley Quinn who has escaped from the prison (without even taking her espresso machine...silly woman). I am really excited for these films and can't wait to see how the sequel to Suicide Squad will be casted.

Favourite scene: When Harley Quinn has her skin bleached. The scenes between HQ and the Joker were not rehearsed outside the set...or even at all. I feel this made them really electric and unpredictable and the acting was great. I just found it so intense.

Least favourite scene: The end credits...because the film was over *cries* BUT I did appreciate the use of Twenty One Pilots and their new track 'Heathens' as the end credits song.

Favourite track: I loved the use of Eminem-Without Me when the squad were reunited with their old possessions before beginning their mission. But, despite having three of my least favourite artists writing and performing the track, I can't stop listening to Sucker for Pain by Wiz Khalifa, Lil Wayne and Imagine Dragons. Sorry, Twenty One Pilots...you've been a little over played by Radio One AGAIN.

Least favourite track: Wreak Havoc by Skylar Grey. To me, it's a rip off of Black Skinhead by Kanye West

Favourite character: I really loved the Joker, played by Jared Leto, and Killer Croc played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. Fun fact...did you know it took seven hours to get the actor of Killer Croc into full costume and makeup? No CGI was used at all.

Least favourite character: Batman. I just don't like Batman

Rating out of 5 stars:

****

Thanks for reading this post guys, I hope you've enjoyed it and I've sort of motivated you to go and see the film if you haven't already.

Stay tuned for more videos and blog posts

Much love
